History

In June of 1899, “Place of Cloudcroft” came into existence after Charles Bishop and John Arthur brought the El Paso and Northeastern Railroad northward to the mining town of White Oaks and beyond. As they were working on plans to extend the railroad, they realized they needed timber and railroad ties and sent men to survey the Sacramento Mountains as the source. In fall of 1898, a report came back that not only could the men get the supplies they needed to build their railroad, the beauty of the region they surveyed could attract visitors from a wide territory and the name “Cloudcroft” was suggested.

By the end of 1898, the railroad had been extended to Toboggan Canyon and construction was started at the summit in preparation of tourists. A Pavilion was constructed that consisted of a dining room, kitchen, parlor, entertainment hall, and 40 tents for guests to sleep in. The Pavilion was officially opened in 1899 and glowing reports spread like wildfire. The Pavilion burned twice in the 1920s, but was rebuilt each time.

The railroad finally reached the town of Cloudcroft in 1900 and construction of a depot began. In the beginning three trains arrived in Cloudcroft daily, hauling logs, mail and passengers. As automobiles and trucks became common means of transportation, the train began to lose money and eventually had to close in 1947.
